That means two more cutting-edge ABB software and computer systems trading electricity live have gone online within the past year. Trading electricity like a commodity was until recently thought to be impossible. Electricity is instantaneously produced and consumed, and until the early 1990s, the world’s electricity supply was managed by government-regulated, vertically-integrated, monopolistic utility companies. But all this has changed in the past decade, thanks to significant increases in computing power, the arrival of internet-based trading systems and advances in the mathematical software that can optimize buying and selling between thousands of generators and loads - even while maintaining the security of the national grid. The Philippines and Western Australia now join five other major networks around the world using ABB computer systems and software to manage and operate their power markets. In Western Australia, the Wholesale Electricity Market System （WEMS） launched a live trading system in September 2006, while in the Philippines the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market （WESM） "went live" in June 2006. An ABB specialty ABB is a world leader in the development of these very sophisticated systems, and have supplied them for about half of the world’s deregulated electricity markets. "It’s a new business area for ABB, dealing with a deregulated power concept that did not even exist in the world 15 years ago,” says Peter Maltbaek, spokesman for ABB’s power systems group in Santa Clara, California. “With the Philippines and Western Australia now online, ABB has seven such systems in operation around the world, and we have been awarded most of the international procurements for new systems in the past five years.”ABB’s systems ensure deregulated markets enjoy secure e-commerce internet trading between power producers and consumers.
